“The First Cut”

5th October 2012 – 27th January 2013. New exhibition of artists working with paper in extraordinary ways at Manchester City Galleries. The First Cut is a major exhibition featuring new and recent work by over 30 international contemporary artists who work with paper in revolutionary ways. It explores how established and emerging artists are transforming the humble scrap of paper, though cutting, folding and sculpting into amazingly powerful creations that could be destroyed with a single tear. Fragility and beauty sit side-by-side with dark fairytale imagery, sinister scenes and stark political comment. The artists featured cite a diverse range of influences on their work from globalisation and enviromentalism, sexuality and slavery to architecture, fashion, fairytales and death metal.

“This group of internationally important artists all take paper, that most familiarand daily of materialss and transform it into something extraordinary and otherwordly”. Dr Maria Balshaw, Director of Manchester City Galleries.

I am delighted to have several pieces included in this show, including the original Money Map of the World collage, gun sculpture “The Judge” and a brand new grenade sculpture “Inheritance”, which was made especially for the show. I have also been commissioned to to produce a new limited edition print from this sculpture entitled “Boom” which is displayed as part of the exhibition and is being sold through the Gallery.

Images of “Inheritance” can be seen in the Sculpture/Weapons section of my website and “Boom” in the Print section.
