London Art Fair 2023

Specimen Helleborus Ukrainniae
I am delighted to be showing my new plant sculptures at the forthcoming London Art Fair at the BDC Islington with Tag Fine Arts . Find Tag on the main floor at Stand no 15
This Hellebore sculpture is based on one which has been in bloom in  in my garden in London since December.  Hellebores are also known as the Christmas Rose, as well as the Lenten Rose so they have quite a long season but the flowers come in winter, often seen emerging out of the snow.  They are tough. I think of these sculptures as  Hellebores of Wars as the leaves and petals of this one is made from Ukrainian Hyrivnia’s, with some Afghan Afghanis on the stems.  I find the relationship between the political and historical aspects of making plants with banknotes a really interesting one, along with various ideas around ecology, folklore and economy. If a banknote can be seen as a symbol of the work of the human who earns the banknote, in this way the plant itself is representative of a nation or person. When I was making them  I was also think of them as a symbol  of freedom and a fightback against the dark.
I hope you will come along and see them.
